Senate Republicans plan to resurrect the nomination of Charles Pickering to the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Pickering was rejected last year by the Democrat-controlled Senate. Democrats questioned his views on civil rights.

Pickering, a federal judge in Mississippi, is a close friend of Sen. Trent Lott (R-Miss.), who was forced to step down as majority leader last December for suggesting the United States would have been better off with segregation.

The 5th Circuit hears cases affecting tribes in Texas, Mississippi and Louisiana. The court has kept casinos owned by two tribes in Texas closed and has often ruled against tribal interests.
