Voters go to polls for Ho-Chunk Nation referendum

printer friendly
Voters in Dane County, Wisconsin, are at the polls today to decide whether to allow the Ho-Chunk Nation to convert a bingo hall into a full-fledged casino.

The tribe has many supporters, including local officials who welcome the $91 million deal. But there are opponents who believe a casino will increase crime, gambling addictions and other problems.

The Coalition for the Fair Indian Gaming and Revenue has been pushing for approval. No Dane Casino is leading the opposition.

The vote is non-binding but Gov. Jim Doyle (D) said he will abide by it when determining whether to approve the casino.
