N.M. tribes seek to renegotiate gaming compacts

Nine New Mexico tribes seeking to renegotiate their gaming compacts with the state ended talks without a new agreement last month, The Albuquerque Journal reports.

The tribes want to expand hours and offer "comp" food and lodging in order to bring in more business. Compacts signed in 2001 require casinos to close four hours day, except on weekends and holidays, and do not allow for reduced food and lodging.

Gov. Bill Richardson (D) said tribes would have to share more revenues in a new compact.
