Editorial: Schwarzenegger not doing what we expected

printer friendly
"Gov.. Arnold Schwarzenegger long ago pledged to get California Indian tribes to pay a larger share of their earnings to help offset the state's staggering budget deficit. He has kept his word, trying to broker a new deal among some tribes to help the state get on firmer financial footing.

But the governor's negotiations with the tribes have the state inching ever closer to what may be a Faustian deal -- a case where Schwarzenegger appears poised to grant major expansion rights to just a few tribes while pushing other gambling interests to increase their take of California's gambling jackpot.

That wouldn't be a bargain for the Golden State. The problems caused by the rapid expansion of Indian casinos have outpaced the state's ability to handle them."
