Exclusivity a focus in gaming compact negotiations

California tribes negotiating for new gaming compacts say the exclusive right to operate slot machines is a crucial point in discussions.

Currently, tribes with compacts signed in 1999 can operate up to 2,000 machines. The group of tribes now talking with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) are hoping to break the limit in exchange for contributing more to the state. The deal is said to be worth anywhere from $500 million to $1 billion, possibly more.

Tribes all over the state are opposed to an initiative that would allow non-Indian card clubs and racetracks to operate slots. If a new compact is reached, Schwarzenegger is expected to publicly oppose the referendum.

Tribes involved in talks say an agreement could be announced in a matter of weeks.
