Rincon Band asks court to block new gaming compacts

The Rincon Band of Luiseno Indians asked a federal court on Monday to block new gaming compacts signed by California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) and five tribes.

The Rincon Band says the agreements will hurt remote and smaller tribes. The tribe cited a study which showed its revenues could drop from $185 million to $114 million if other tribes are allowed to offer more slot machines.

The new compacts have to be reviewed by the Bureau of Indian Affairs before becoming legal. The BIA could approve, deny or do nothing.

A hearing has been scheduled on Friday to consider the tribe's request. The tribe is promoting a website, www.stopunlimitedslots.org to oppose the compacts.
