California tribe and racetrack form partnership

printer friendly
Non-Indian racetracks in California are trying to end the tribal monopoly on slot machines but the owners of one facility have found it is better to work with tribes than fight.

The Del Mar track signed a three-year, $1.5 million deal with the Barona Band of Mission Indians. The tribe sponsors promotions at the track and gives away gambling chips and other prizes. Casino patrons can gamble on races at the track.

The Del Mar isn't part of the ballot initiative to allow slot machines at non-Indian racetracks and card clubs. If it is approved, Del Mar won't get any slots but will share in a purse from other tracks.
