Schwarzenegger, tribe headed to court on gaming

The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians and Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) will be in court tomorrow to argue over the tribe's gaming initiative.

Proposition 70 would allow more slot machines at casinos. In exchange, tribes would share 8.84 percent of net revenues with the state.

The tribe and the Schwarzenegger administration are each disputing the language used to describe Proposition 70 in "pro and con" arguments and on the ballot box. Schwarzenegger opposes the initiative.

The tribe is seeking to contrast Proposition 70 with compacts Schwarzenegger signed. One key issue is how much the state would get under each proposal.

The tribe claims Proposition 70 will generate $500 million a year while the state estimates the compacts would generate between $150 million to $200 million a year.
