Narragansett Tribe, supporters vow to continue fight

printer friendly
The Narragansett Tribe and its supporters say they won't give up the fight for a casino in Rhode Island.

The state Supreme Court rejected a referendum that put the issue to voters. Tribal supporters say they want the tribe to have the same opportunities as other tribes.

The tribe and its backer, Harrah's Entertainment, are considering their options. Narragansett Chief Sachem Matthew Thomas said the tribe will present another casino proposal next year and lobby Congress to rescind a rider that treats the tribe differently than others. The rider prevents the tribe from opening a casino on its reservation.
