Third tribe wants southern New Mexico casino

A third tribe has entered the race for an off-reservation casino in southern New Mexico.

Picuris Pueblo, the smallest tribe in the state and one of the most remote, is working with a state gaming company on the project. Compadres Gaming says the $150 million casino resort would be near El Paso, Texas.

Jemez Pueblo is also interested in a casino in the area. So is the Fort Sill Apache Tribe of Oklahoma, whose ancestors lived in the region.

Southern New Mexico is home to the Mescalero Apache Nation, which operates a casino, and racetracks that offer video gaming. In El Paso, the Tigua Tribe has a Class II casino.
