Off-reservation casino in Kansas gains support

The Park City, Kansas, city council voted 7-1 on Tuesday to help the Iowa Tribe of Kansas and Nebraska open an off-reservation casino.

The council entered into a memorandum of understanding with the tribe. The agreement calls for land to be taken into trust for the tribe and for the state to negotiate a gaming compact. The city would receive revenues and certain taxes from the tribe.

The tribe has a reservation in the northeastern Kansas-southern Nebraska area. Former Wichita Mayor Bob Knight is working with the tribe on the project, billed as a 80,000-square-foot casino with a 250 to 300-room hotel and theme park that would create up to 1,500 permanent jobs.
