Lawmakers to review compact for urban casino

printer friendly
California lawmakers are returning to work today and will consider a controversial compact for a large urban casino in the Bay Area.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) signed a compact with the Lytton Band of Pomo Indians in August. The deal calls for a large casino in San Pablo with about 2,500 machines. The tribe would share revenues with the state.

Some lawmakers objected due to the size of the project. They thought the tribe was going to keep using an existing card club on the site.

The land in question was taken into trust through a Congressional rider. Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-California) has been seeking to block the compact unless local concerns are addressed.
