Seneca Nation interested in Catskills casino deal

printer friendly
The Seneca Nation is interested in casino in the Catskills, The Buffalo News reported.

The tribe has authority to open three casinos in upstate New York. The location of the third is in dispute. Tribal leaders want to build in a Buffalo suburb while local officials want one in downtown Buffalo.

To end the disagreement, Republican businessman David Flaum has been promoting a deal that would have the tribe agree to the downtown location in exchange for a Catskills casino. Seneca Nation Barry Snyder said the tribe was open to the agreement.

State law currently allows three casinos in the Catskills region, 90 minutes north of New York City, but none have been built. Gov. George Pataki (R) is seeking approval for two more casinos to allow two out-of-state tribes to open facilities there.
