Wisconsin governor seeks arbitration over compact

printer friendly
Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle (D) said the state may go to arbitration if the Ho-Chunk Nation won't pay an estimated $30 million under the tribal-state gaming compact.

Doyle said he was confident the tribe would make a payment eventually. But he said the company includes an arbitration process when disputes arise.

The tribe says it doesn't have to make the payment because it is not offering the new games authorized by the compact. "The Nation is anxious to conclude the negotiations with the State and to make its first negotiated payment this year," the tribe said in a statement last night.

A Republican lawmaker says the tribe's casinos should be shut down for refusing to pay.
