Ho-Chunk Nation withholds compact payments

printer friendly
Leaders of the Ho-Chunk Nation say they are justified in withholding more than $60 million in compact payments from the state.

The tribe signed a compact calling for revenue-sharing. But since the state Supreme Court said Gov. Jim Doyle (D) lacked the authority to enter into the agreements, the tribe says it doesn't have to make the payment.

At any rate, the tribe has stopped offering the Class III games authorized by the compact. Other tribes, however, are still running them and plan to make their payments.

The tribe continues to meet with Doyle to negotiate a new compact.
