Three tribes compete for casinos in Barstow

Three tribes, some hundreds of miles away, are competing for a chance to host a casino in Barstow, California.

Located along an interstate between Los Angeles and Las Vegas, Barstow is seen as an ideal market. That's why the Chemehuevi Tribe, 180 miles away, the Los Coyotes Band of Mission Indians, 157 miles away, and the Big Lagoon Rancheria, 719 miles away, are interested.

The Los Coyotes Band and the Big Lagoon Rancheria have teamed up to build casinos side by side. The arrangement was suggested by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R), The Los Angeles Times reports. The deal has the approval of the city council.

The Chemehuevi Tribe already has a compact with the state and owns land in Barstow. But the city council hasn't been as receptive to a casino deal.
