Schwarzenegger warns tribe on proposed casino tower

printer friendly
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) is warning the Jamul Indian Village that the tribe's proposed casino is in breach of the tribal-state compact before it has even been built.

In a letter, Schwarzenegger's legal affairs secretary said the proposed 30-story casino tower may violate the compact's requirement to mitigate the impact on surrounding communities. The letter said the casino must be operated in a way that doesn't endanger public health, safety or welfare.

Jamul Chairman Leon Acebedo said he was anxious to meet with Schwarzenegger's office to discuss the concerns. "It's kind of hard to be in breach of anything when you haven't built anything," he told The San Diego Union-Tribune.

The tribe proposed the casino on its reservation after an off-reservation casino plan floundered at the state and federal level. Schwarzenegger opposed the off-reservation land acquisition.
