Judge allows state to join tribe's Class III lawsuit

printer friendly
A federal judge has allowed the state of Nebraska to join the Santee Sioux Tribe's Class III lawsuit.

The tribe is suing the Interior Department over the types of Class III games that are legal in the state. The department says the tribe may only offer lotteries, keno and on-track betting. The tribe says it should be allowed more games because they are not outlawed in the state.

The state has refused to negotiate a Class III compact with the tribe. Attorney general Jon Bruning said the state "has a strong interest in controlling gambling on the Indian reservations," according to the Associated Press.
