Oregon tribe holds open house on casino proposal

printer friendly
The Confederated Warm Springs Tribes held an open house on Thursday to discuss plans for an off-reservation casino in Oregon.

The tribe is planning a 90,000-square foot casino, a 250-room hotel, a meeting facility and parking for 3,700 cars on 25 acres. The land is located in Cascade Locks, about 40 miles east of Portland.

The tribe signed a compact with Gov. Ted Kulongoski (D) for the casino. They say the site is a better fit for a casino than land the tribe owns in the environmentally-sensitive Hood River area.

The open house occurred as the Bureau of Indian Affairs held the first of five hearings on the tribe's land acquisition. Other tribes in Oregon are opposing the off-reservation casino.
