"Now that we have Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's official declaration of who he will permit to build off-reservation casinos in Barstow and under what circumstances, it's time for Barstow to accept some difficult truths.
The Chemehuevi aren't, in all likelihood, going to be permitted a casino in Barstow. It's just not going to happen.
This not to say they don't deserve one. This is not to say that their community won't benefit from one. And this is not to say Barstow wouldn't benefit from one. The wording of the compacts for the Los Coyotes and Big Lagoon Rancheria tribes -- the two approved for side-by-side casinos in Barstow -- makes it extremely difficult for any other tribes to build casinos in town."
