Man ordered to turn over foxwood.com to tribe

printer friendly
A federal judge has ordered a man who operates foxwood.com to turn the site over to the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut, the owner of the Foxwoods Casino.

In a 23-page ruling [PDF: Ruling], U.S. District Court Judge Janet C. Hall said Raymond Redican Jr. violated a federal law that prohibits "cybersquatting." She found that Redican registered the foxwood.com name in order to divert people who were looking for foxwoods.com, the casino's official site.

Hall also said Redican violated the state's Unfair Trade Practices Act. She said Redican engaged in deceptive practices by seeking to profit from operating the site. Redican acknowledged that he sold advertisements in hopes of making money from people who typed in the wrong address in their web browser.

The judge ordered Redican to turn over the site by December 19. But he says he will appeal.

The tribe is pleased with the ruling, a spokesperson said.
