Lawsuit filed over Seneca Nation casino in Buffalo

A lawsuit was filed in federal court on Tuesday in hopes of stopping the construction of the Seneca Nation's casino in Buffalo.

The lawsuit accuses Interior Secretary Gale Norton of not following the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act with respect to off-reservation casinos. The Buffalo facility is located off the reservation but falls under a Congressionally-approved land settlement that authorizes a total of three casinos -- including two off-reservation -- for the tribe.

The lawsuit also claims the Buffalo land was taken into trust in violation of environmental and historic preservation laws.

In related news, the Seneca Nation debuted a new hotel at its off-reservation casino in Niagara Falls. The $240 facility, pictured on the right, is 26 stories high and includes hotels, an auditorium and other amenities.
