White Earth Band and city agree on casino land

printer friendly
The White Earth Band of Ojibwe has reached an agreement with the city of Mahnomen, Minnesota, over the status of the tribe's casino land.

The Shooting Star Casino sits on non-trust land within city borders. So the tribe has paid nearly $9 million in property taxes to the city, county and state since the facility opened.

The tribe wants the land placed in trust, which would remove the land from the property tax rolls. If that happens, the tribe has agreed to pay $70,000 to the city for five years, after which the two sides will discuss the issue again.
