Passamaquoddy Tribe's gaming initiative rejected

printer friendly
The Passamaquoddy Tribe suffered defeat on Wednesday when the Secretary of State said the tribe's gaming initiative won't make the ballot due to invalid signatures.

The tribe had collected around 60,000 signatures in hopes of placing the issue on the ballot this year. But with around 13,000 invalid signatures, there weren't enough to force a statewide vote, according to the state.

The tribe isn't giving up, though. Fred Moore, the tribe's representative in the State Legislature, said supporters will try again in 2007.

The tribe is seeking approval to build a racetrack with slot machines. State voters approved one such facility in 2004.
