The Mohegan Tribe of Connecticut is closely monitoring legislation that would change the review and approval process for off-reservation gaming.

The tribe hasn't made any off-reservation gaming proposals. But the tribe is backing two other tribes in their efforts to develop casinos on land that is not currently held in trust.

The tribe is working with the Menominee Nation to convert a former dog track in Wisconsin into a casino. The Menominees are going through the two-part determination process under Section 2 of the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.

The Mohegans are also working with the Cowlitz Tribe of Washington. As a newly recognized tribe, the Cowlitz are seeking an initial reservation under Section 20.

The House and the Senate are considering bills that would do away with the two-part determination process and make it harder for tribes to open casinos on land acquired after 1988.
