Jemez Pueblo seeks IGRA grandfather clause

printer friendly
A New Mexico tribe seeking to build an off-reservation casino says amendments, if any, to the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act should include a grandfather clause.

Jemez Pueblo, in the north-central part of the state, already submitted a land-into-trust application. The tribe wants to build a casino in Anthony, in the far southern part of the state.

Sen. John McCain (R-Arizona), the chairman of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee, is sponsoring a bill that would block similar acquisitions in the future. But the measure contains an April 15 cut-off date for any new applications and would allow 13 pending applications to be processed.

The bill also includes an amendment, sponsored by Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Oklahoma), to require disclosure of tribal gaming revenues to tribal members.
