BIA holds third meeting on Section 20 regulations

printer friendly
The Bureau of Indian Affairs held its third meeting on the proposed Section 20 regulations for the taking of land into trust for gaming purposes.

The meeting was held in Sacramento, California. According to The Riverside Press-Enterprise, leaders of the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians and the Tribal Alliance of Sovereign Indian Nations called for an end to off-reservation shopping.

But George Skibine, the director of the Office of Indian Gaming Management, said he was restricted by existing law. Bills pending in Congress would require tribes seeking land that is not currently part of a reservation to document ancestral, historic and other connections.

The final meeting takes place tomorrow in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
