Three Nebraska tribes are launching a petition to legalize Class III gaming in the state.
The Winnebago Tribe, the Omaha Tribe and the Santee Sioux Tribe want voters to authorize an off-reservation casino. Profits would be split 70-30 between the tribes and the state.
The tribes need to collect 115,000 signatures by July 7 in order to put the proposal on the November ballot. But since voters previously rejected a gaming referendum in 2004, there are legal questions about submitting similar proposals more than once in three years.
Separately, other groups are circulating petitions to authorize certain forms of gaming.
