Barstow opposes off-reservation referendum

The city council in Barstow voted 3-2 on Monday to oppose a ballot referendum on off-reservation gaming.

The council previously took a neutral stance on Measure H. The referendum creates a casino zone for an off-reservation casino proposed by the Chemehuevi Tribe but does not include casinos sought by the Los Coyotes Band and the Big Lagoon Rancheria.

Leaders on the council changed their mind because they said state lawmakers won't support gaming at all in the city unless the city supports the Los Coyotes and Big Lagoon casinos. The two tribes have signed a compact with the state while the Chemehuevi Tribe has not.
