Wisconsin lawmakers failed to override Gov. Jim Doyle's veto of an off-reservation gaming bill despite a heavy lobbying effort by tribes and interested groups.

Doyle (D) rejected the bill because he said it conflicts with the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. It would require legislative approval for all two-part determination gaming applications.

The Forest County Potawatomi Tribe and its allies lobbied hard for an override. The tribe opposes an off-reservation casino sought by the Menominee Nation.
