The Pokagon Band of the Potawatomi Indians finally broke ground on the Four Winds Casino Resort in New Buffalo Township, Michigan.
The tribe was restored to recognition by an act of Congress. But litigation by gaming opponents prevented the acquisition of 675 acres for an initial reservation.
After six years of delay, a federal appeals court dismissed all challenges to the acquisition in January. The tribe broke ground on the casino on Saturday, with the opening slated in summer 2007.
