Two California tribes seeking to build casinos hundreds of miles from their reservations are asking other tribes to drop their opposition to the project.

The Big Lagoon Rancheria and the Los Coyotes Band of Cahuilla and Cupeno Indians want to build side-by-side casinos in Barstow. Neither tribe has ancestral connections to the city, located on a major interstate halfway between Los Angeles and Las Vegas.

Other tribes in southern California don't support the project, accusing Big Lagoon and Los Coyotes of reservation shopping. The Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians and the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians are among the opponents.

But the Agua Caliente Band just signed a new compact that calls for expanded gaming and other deals are possible. That has Big Lagoon and Los Coyotes arguing that other tribes no longer have a reason to oppose their project.
