Little hope seen for off-reservation casinos

Tracking casino proposals across Indian Country.
Two tribes hoping to build off-reservation casinos in Barstow, California, aren't likely to see action on their compacts.

The Los Coyotes Band of Cahuilla and Cupeno Indians and the Big Lagoon Rancheria want to build side-by-side casinos at a site off a major interstate. They signed agreements with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R) but lawmakers rejected them by a 7-2 vote after other gaming tribes complained.

The Los Coyotes Band is now fasting at the state Capitol in hopes of moving the deal forward. The Agua Caliente Band, one of the opponents of the Barstow deal, signed its own compact that is almost near approval.
