The Bureau of Indian Affairs is considering a proposal by two Chippewa tribes to open an off-reservation casino in Beloit, Wisconsin.

The Bad River Band of the Lake Superior Tribe of Chippewa Indians and the St. Croix Chippewa Indians submitted their land-into-trust application over two years ago. The plan calls for a casino with a 500-room hotel, a 35,000-square-foot convention center, an entertainment complex and four restaurants.

Review was held because the BIA objection to a provision in an agreement between the tribes and the city of Beloit. The deal barred the tribes from using the land for anything other than the casino complex.

The tribes and the city renegotiated the deal to eliminate the provision and the application was sent back to the BIA.
