Debate heated at forum on Narragansett casino

An hour-long forum on the Narragansett Tribe's proposed casino in Rhode Island turned out to be a heated and hostile affair.

Narragansett Chief Sachem Matthew Thomas appeared with Harrah’s Entertainment CEO Gary W. Loveman. The tribe and Harrah's want to build a casino in the town of West Warwick, which supports the plan.

Speaking on opposition was former Gov. Lincoln Almond. He sparred repeatedly with Thomas and Loveman over various aspects of the proposal.

The tribe and Harrah's say the casino will create jobs and tax relief for the state. Opponents like Almond say it will lead to addiction and social problems.

The tribe and Harrah's need state voters to amend the constitution to authorize the project. The issue is on the November ballot.
