The St. Regis Mohawk Tribe and supporters held a rally on Thursday in hopes of spurring final approval of an off-reservation casino.
The tribe wants to open a $500 million facility in the Catskills. The project has been under review by the Bureau of Indian Affairs for more than six years, with some of the delay traced to the tribe's changing of business partners and casino sites.
Local officials in the Catskills support the project. Outgoing Gov. George Pataki (R) also wants the casino.
If the BIA approves the off-reservation casino, the state governor has to concur with the decision.
