Defeated at the polls, the Narragansett Tribe of Rhode Island is still seeking to open a casino.
Chief Sachem Matthew Thomas said he will meet with state lawmakers to discuss a casino. The plan requires the repeal of a rider to the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act that prevents the tribe from engaging in gaming on its lands.
The tribe asked voters to amend the state constitution to authorize a casino off the reservation. The referendum was overwhelmingly rejected at the polls.
