Oneida Nation has hopes for New York casino

The Oneida Nation of Wisconsin isn't giving up dreams of a casino in New York, its ancestral homeland.

The tribe is part of the 250,000-acre Oneida land claim. A settlement would allow the tribe to build a casino in the Catskills, about 90 miles north of New York City.

The deal hit a snag when the New York Oneidas, who weren't part of the arrangement, objected to the presence of out-of-state tribes. Then the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that tribes couldn't assert sovereignty over ancestral lands without going through the land-into-trust process.

The Wisconsin Oneidas are closely watching the oucome of the dispute, a spokesperson said.
