Study cites impact of Minnesota tribal gaming

Tribal casinos contribute $285 million to rural economies, a new study from the Minnesota Indian Gaming Association shows.

Researchers from the University of Minnesota looked at the impact of tribal casinos on their communities. They found that tribes contribute significantly to the economies in nine counties.

The Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe, for example, contributed to 17 percent of the total payroll in two counties. The Prairie Island Indian Community's payroll topped $700 million in one county.

The study also said Minnesota's gaming industry has matured. MIGA has opposed attempts by tribes to open urban casinos in off-reservation areas.
