Two California tribes who want to build side-by-side casinos hundreds of miles from their reservations were back at the state capitol on Wednesday.

The Los Coyotes Band of Cahuilla and Cuperno Indians and the Big Lagoon Rancheria teamed up at the suggestion of Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger (R). They signed compacts to allow unions and share revenues from their off-reservation casinos in Barstow.

But other tribes with casinos objected. The tribes criticized Los Coyotes and Big Lagoon for "reservation shopping" and for agreeing to allow unions to organize.

Now the two tribes have three months before the Legislature adjourns to get the compacts ratified. Big Lagoon Chairman Virgil Moorehead said his tribe will seek to a build a casino on its environmentally-sensitive reservation if the deal fails again.
