New Mexico gaming compacts set for final approval

New gaming compacts with 10 of 13 New Mexico tribes are up for final legislative approval.

The compacts, which would expire in 2037, give the state a bigger share -- capped at 10.75 percent -- of slot machine revenues. The deal could bring in an additional $600 million, Gov. Bill Richardson (D) says.

The tribes that signed the compact are the Pueblos of Isleta, Laguna, Ohkay Owingeh, Sandia, San Felipe, Santa Ana, Santa Clara, Taos and Tesuque, and the Jicarilla Apache Nation. Acoma Pueblo dropped out of the package but could sign on within eight months.

Pojoaque Pueblo and the Mescalero Apache Nation aren't part of the deal. They signed compacts more recently than the other tribes.
