County sues to stop Ione Band casino proposal

printer friendly
Amador County, California, has filed suit against the Interior Department in hopes of stopping the Ione Band of Miwok Indians from opening a casino.

The county says the Ione Band doesn't qualify for an exception under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. The lawsuit challenges the Interior Department's determination that 228 acres the tribe wants to be placed in trust can be used for a casino [PDF: Indian land determination].

Despite the county's opposition, some residents and business owners in the town of Plymouth support the casino. They say they have been targeted for backing the tribe's effort.

Documents about the dispute can be found at http://www.co.amador.ca.us./eirs/plymouth/index.cfm.
