Opinion: New approach to fight against tribal casino

Note: Peter F. Secchia, a member of the anti-gaming group 23 is Enough, is a former U.S. ambassador and a major Republican donor.

"The federal law that authorizes tribal casinos won't soon be changed. The political obstacles to reform are insurmountable. Most in D.C. know this and tribal financial contributions are humongus.

The eventual development of a tax-free Gun Lake Casino has pushed me to think about the possible creation of a downtown Grand Rapids casino. i.e.: Why not help our local businesses stay in business? By keeping as many dollars and people here as possible, we can also benefit scores of deserving activities, aid institutions and maintain our flourishing downtown.

I have opposed a non-tax paying casino for West Michigan as a member of 23 Is Enough. My position was based on economic factors: unfair competition, tax-free existence and the sovereign freedom to ignore state laws. Now maybe we must try a new approach. With this idea, I've tried to only set the stage for discussion."
