Schwarzenegger softens stance on gaming

When he ran for governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger angered tribes by accusing them of not paying their "fair share" to the state. He later accused tribes of "ripping off" the state and called them "special interests."

But now you can see his image in an television ad supporting gaming. And he signed new compacts with five tribes to give the state a cut of their revenues. What gives?

''Schwarzenegger believes that good economic policy, over the long term, is always the same as good environmental policy,'' Robert F. Kennedy Jr., who is related to the governor by marriage, wrote recently in Time Magazine.

Schwarzenegger has been pushing for the new compacts, which he says will bring in up to $500 million a year, though the figure has been disputed.
