Rep. Langevin opposes Narragansett gaming

Rep. James R. Langevin (D-Rhode Island) said he will oppose efforts by the Narragansett Tribe to restore its gaming rights.

The tribe won a court case that said it could open a casino on its reservation. But the late Sen. John H. Chafee (R) wrote a rider that barred the tribe from the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act.

With the help of the law/lobbying firm of AndersonTuell, the tribe has been seeking Congressional support for repeal of the rider. Langevin, however, said he won't go against the wishes of voters -- who rejected a Narragansett last fall -- after meeting with local officials opposed to gaming on the reservation.
