NIGC reports 11 percent rise in tribal revenues

Tribal gaming facilities took in $25.1 billion in 2006, an increase of 11 percent from the year prior, the National Indian Gaming Commission said on Monday.

"The Indian gaming industry has doubled between 2001 and 2006, going from $12.8 billion to $25.1 billion respectively," NIGC Chairman Phil Hogen said at the United South and Eastern Tribes (USET) semi-annual meeting in Houston, Texas [Press Release].

Tribes in Region II, which covers California and northern Nevada, reported $7.7 billion in revenues, the highest in the nation. This was a 9.8 percent increase from 2005.

Tribes in Region VI, which covers Alabama, Connecticut, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, and New York, reported $6.2 billion, the second highest. This was a 12.8 percent increase.

The highest growth rate was seen among tribes in Region V, which covers Kansas, Oklahoma, and Texas. The facilities generated $2.1 billion, an increase of 22.7 percent from 2005.

The public’s continued good will is a necessary element to continued growth which is why the role of the NIGC must be reaffirmed,' Hogen said.
