Hundreds of labor union supporters rallied at the state Capitol on Tuesday to protest gaming compacts with five California tribes.
UNITE-HERE, the union responsible for the anti-sovereignty ruling from the National Labor Relations Board,
organized the rally. The group and its members say the compacts don't include provisions that will protect workers.
As demonstrators waved a banner that said "Billions for tribes. Nothing for workers,"
UNITE-HERE political director Jack Gribbon referred to the tribes as "a gambling cartel in Southern California," The Sacramento Bee reported.
At issue is "card-check neutrality," a process that makes it easier for unions to organize. The new compacts do not include language that was included in deals that some tribes signed in 2004.
