Connecticut tribes look beyond borders to diversify

Connecticut's two federally recognized tribes operate two of the most successful casinos in the world but that isn't stopping them from looking elsewhere for gaming opportunities.

With competition growing, the Mohegan Tribe and the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation are trying to diversify their holdings. The goal, as Mohegan Chairman Bruce “Two Dogs” Bozsum told The New London Day, is to stay "healthy."

The Mohegans already opened a racetrack with slot machines in Pennsylvania. The tribe has four other projects in the works -- including the Cowlitz Tribe's proposed casino in Washington and the Menominee Nation's proposed off-reservation casino in Wisconsin.

The Pequots are moving ahead with their own gaming venue in Pennsylvania. Elsewhere, the tribe is backing the Pauma Band of Mission Indians in California, two Kansas tribes and is eyeing the Caribbean.
