Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe on track with casino plans

printer friendly

The Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe of Massachusetts is moving forward with plans for a $1 billion casino.

New Chairman Shawn Hendricks said the tribe is unified as it files its first land-into-trust applications. The tribe wants to build a casino in the town of Middleboro and wants land at its headquarters in Mashpee held in trust.

But some tribal members accuse Hendricks and other tribal leaders of mismanagement. They want to see how tribe has spent the money it got from a developer who is financed their federal recognition bid and who is backing the casino.

Hendricks took over after his predecessor, Glenn Marshall, resigned in disgrace. Marshall admitted that he distorted his military record and acknowledged an 1981 rape conviction.
