Passamaquoddy Tribe needs developer for racino

Voters in Maine go to the polls next Tuesday to determine whether the Passamaquoddy Tribe should be able to open a racino.

If Question 1 is approved, the tribe will find a developer for the $30 million project. "There is no backer, no contracts or agreement or anything like that," Rick Phillips Doyle, the governor of the Pleasant Point Reservation, told The Bangor Daily News. "All we have right now is the tribe putting up the money for the campaign."

The tribe plans to build a racetrack with slot machines in Washington County. Initial plans call for 500 machines, to be increased to 1,500 machines in the future.

Voters previously authorized non-Indian racinos. Maine's major newspapers have endorsed the Passamaquoddy racino as a matter of fairness.
